A Cozy Tavern. A Chilly Canal.

Fresh snow, bundled little ones, the twinkle of lights and a cozy tavern to settle in. What more could you ask for at the start of winter?

Yardley, Pennsylvania is a special place to us. My generous sister and brother-in-law always open their home when I need a little quiet and nostalgic respite from the hustle and bustle of Houston. Yardley is brimming with history. A drive around the area will bring you to Washington’s Crossing, old taverns, revolutionary-war era stone homes and quaint shops.

Arriving to that initial December chill felt terrific after the endless summer of Houston and l hit the Delaware Canal path for a long (nice, brutal, beneficial…honestly I have no words for a run that long) 16-mile run. Can’t leave my Houston Marathon training behind!

An old church, an old library, horses and one of the many patriotic monuments of the area are all gentle reminders of the living legacy here.

A few days later the snowfall came blanketing the town in a sea of white. We couldn’t pass up the chance to enjoy a little snow.

The canal is also a great place to bundle the family and head out for a pleasant stroll.

The canal towpath is lined with charming towns, so the chance to pop into a cozy spot is never too far away. We stopped at one of my favorites, the Continental Tavern, with its inviting dining room and delicious comfort food.

It is my top spot in the town for a glass of wine, a beer, warm soup and a sandwich or a great burger.
